Barcelos along the EN103 Culture, Art and History at Every Stop

Barcelos, situated on the banks of the River Cávado, is a city rich in history, culture and tradition. Founded with the charter of King Afonso Henriques in 1166-1167, the town became a county under King Dinis and, later, a duchy, when it became the cradle of the House of Bragança. Landmark monuments, such as the bridge over the Cávado (1325-1330), the Paço dos Condes and the Mother Church, reflect the historical and architectural importance of the area.

The Miracle of the Crosses, in 1504, and the construction of the Temple of Senhor Bom Jesus da Cruz (1705-1710) have profoundly marked the religiosity and identity of Barcelos. In addition, the city continues to be a waypoint on the Portuguese Way of St. James, connecting pilgrims to its rich spiritual and cultural heritage.

National Road 103 runs through the municipality, revealing stunning landscapes such as panoramic hills and riverside areas, as well as a vast historical heritage dating back more than 700 years. Barcelos is also renowned for its handicrafts, especially the iconic Galo de Barcelos, Portugal’s national symbol. The local gastronomy and typical wines complement the authentic experiences offered by the municipality.

Elevated to city status in 1928, Barcelos combines historical experience with modern creativity, making it an unmissable destination for those wishing to explore the cultural and natural wealth of the Minho region. The city combines tradition, flavors and art, offering unique moments to its visitors.
