Braga An Encounter with History and Nature along the EN103

With over 2000 years of history, Braga is the oldest Portuguese city and one of the oldest Christian cities in the world.
Founded by the Romans in 16 BC and named “Bracara Augusta” in honor of Emperor Caesar Augustus. It was the capital of Galicia, from where five Roman roads radiated out, with a vast territory stretching from the north of the Douro to Cantabria. After conquests and reconquests of various peoples, the King of León, Afonso IV, gave it as a dowry to his daughter Teresa on her marriage to Count Henry of Burgundy.

The long history of Braga, also known as the City of Archbishops, is visible in its monuments and churches, the most imposing being the Cathedral, which displays various styles, from Roman to Baroque, and also boasts splendid houses, particularly from the 18th century.

A young, cosmopolitan and multicultural city, Braga boasts a wide range of successful and prosperous scenarios in areas as vital as culture, commerce, industry and services.

Those who visit us have the chance to take part in a varied tourist and cultural programme, following a documented civilizational journey from prehistoric times to the present day and experiencing the authentic culture of Minho, engraved in its vast heritage, ethnographic groups, festivals, fairs and pilgrimages, as well as its rich and varied handicrafts.
