Montalegre Tradition, History and Nature in Alto Barroso

Montalegre, in the heart of the Barroso region, is a territory with deep roots dating back to prehistoric times. Around 4000 years ago, its inhabitants built funerary monuments such as the dolmens of Mourela and Veiga, and cists in Vila da Ponte. During the Metal Age, the Celts populated the area, erecting numerous castros, many of which were romanized after the arrival of the Romans, who left their mark with the imperial road, bridges and the towns of Praesidium (Vila da Ponte) and Caladunum (Cervos).

With the birth of Portugal, Montalegre acquired strategic importance due to its position on the border with Galicia. Castles were built, such as those of Montalegre and Portelo, and charters were instituted by King Afonso III in 1273 and confirmed by subsequent kings. During the reign of King João I, the Lands of Barroso were granted to King Nuno Álvares Pereira.

Montalegre played a role in resisting French troops during the 1809 invasion at the Misarela bridge. In the 19th century, the municipality was divided, creating Boticas and transferring parts of the territory to neighboring municipalities. However, Montalegre’s modern history has been marked by emigration and the abandonment of traditional activities, which was only reversed after 1974 with the revitalization brought about by democratic local government.

Today, Montalegre preserves a rich historical and cultural heritage, keeping the Barroso tradition alive in harmony with its past, becoming a symbol of resistance and authenticity in the region.
