Boticas An Authentic Experience of Culture and Hospitality

Boticas, located in the northwest of Portugal, in the province of Trás-os-Montes, is an integral part of the historic Terras de Barroso. This municipality, created in the administrative reform of 1836, covers an area rich in history and culture, once shared with Montalegre and the extinct municipality of Ruivães. The town of Boticas became the seat of the municipality, preserving a central role in the region.

The name “Barroso” is deeply linked to the history of the region, with origins in the lineage of D. Egas Gomes Barroso, a rich man who served the kings D. Sancho II and D. Afonso III. Afonso III, taking part in the siege of Seville in 1247. This lineage gave rise to noble families such as the Bastos and the Barroso, who exerted significant influence in the region, owning manors and important connections.

Boticas is marked by its natural and historical heritage, especially the Serra do Barroso and the villages of Alturas do Barroso and Covas do Barroso. The county’s coat of arms, approved by the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists, reflects this connection with the land, featuring a black bee and ears of wheat, symbolizing work and abundance.

Today, Boticas represents the heart of the Terras de Barroso, combining history, culture and traditions. It is a territory that preserves its noble roots and the bond with nature, being a living symbol of the rich heritage of Trás-os-Montes.
